Spearing and Shooting
Grand Isle, Vermont

Vermont fishermen along the shores of Lake Champlain are the only US citizens who retain the right to 'shoot' fish. Each year , pike return in large numbers to spawn in the marshes of Lake Champlain . There is a long tradition of both spearing the fish at night at culverts, and of shooting the fish in the marshes. You don't actually shoot the fish but just under it, to stun it, where you can then simply pluck it out of the water. It is a cherished tradition among it's practitioners.

End of the Salmon Season
Cordova, Alaska

Bill Myers fishes for salmon out of Cordova , Alaska, where 500+ fishermen hold licenses to fish for salmon in the Copper River Delta. It is a highly regulated fishery where fisherman must use every opportunity they get from open days to fish for King (Chinook), Red (Sockeye) and Silver (Coho) salmon. This is the place where Pacific salmon first return to the west coast of North America in the Spring . Copper River salmon are prized for their marvelous taste, which develops because of their high fat content. They need that for their very long migration up the Copper River to get to their natal spawning grounds.

Every winter lakes freeze all over the northern U.S., including those in Westchester County, just north of New York City. Locals and residents of the city come to these lakes and ponds, to sit on the hard water, cut holes in the ice, and catch fish. These hardy few are often well rewarded with many firm fleshed fish pulled out of auger punched holes in the ice. If you don't catch anything in one hole, move a few yards and drill another hole.

  • It is a bit unusual, right? I would imagine trout are pretty aerodynamic, as long as its not a big lake trout lunker! I think a slim herring or macke...
